Spring Cleaning Your Screens: The Pro Guide to Maintaining Your Exterior Shading

Spring has officially arrived in the Midwest, and while we’re all excited for patio season, your exterior screens might be wearing a layer of winter dust and pollen.

Because we specialize in premium Phantom Screens and StruXure systems, we know that a little bit of "TLC" goes a long way. Proper maintenance doesn’t just make your home look better, it ensures your motorized shading operates smoothly for years to come.

Here is our professional guide to getting your screens spring-ready.

1. The "Gentle-First" Rule

When it comes to high-quality mesh, skip the power washer. The high pressure can stretch the fabric or damage the tracks.

  • The Tools: A soft-bristle brush, a bucket of warm water, and a mild dish soap (avoid harsh chemicals).

  • The Method: Gently brush away loose debris like spider webs and dried leaves before getting the mesh wet.

2. Deep Cleaning the Mesh

For the best results, extend your screens fully.

  • Lightly spray the mesh with a garden hose (on a low setting).

  • Use a soft cloth or sponge with soapy water to wipe down the surface.

  • Pro Tip: Rinse thoroughly and let the screens dry completely before retracting them back into their housing. Retracting wet screens can lead to trapped moisture and mildew.

3. Don’t Forget the Tracks

This is the most overlooked step! For motorized screens to glide perfectly, the tracks need to be clear.

  • Use a vacuum attachment to suck out any dirt or grit trapped in the side tracks.

  • If your system requires it, apply a light coat of dry silicone spray to the tracks to keep things moving silently. (Avoid oil-based lubricants, which attract more dust).

4. Inspect the Housing and Motor

While you’re cleaning, do a quick visual "check-up."

  • Look for any signs of winter wear or salt buildup on the aluminum housing.

  • Listen to the motor—if you hear any unusual grinding or sticking, it might be time for a professional tune-up.
